Flooding and a Wheel

York is once again getting a wheel. Construction is moving quickly on the structure, in the grounds of the Royal York Hotel next to the station. Given the violent storms recently, it's no surprise that the River Ouse has flooded again. These shots show a class 185 on the Scarborough line and Oliver Cromwell on a Cambridge-York railtour.

Autumn in the UK

Back in the UK and the leaves are changing here too. Here is a shot of an East Midlands Trains DEMU at York with much work done to improve the dynamic range. I don't normally like to edit photos using HDR techniques, but I think this particular shot is effective.

Fall Comes to Southern Ontario

As I prepare to head back to the UK, the fall colours are finally starting to show in Ontario. The rare sight of a P42 leading train 60 helps to accent the changing colours in Whitby.

Trip to the USA

I recently spent a few days in New York State. Rail traffic is considerably busier than in Ontario and I found a great variety of rail operations. I was very impressed with Amtrak, despite the inevitable delays. Their printed timetable exudes confidence while VIA Rail's is a shadow of what it used to be. Whether this is illusory or not, I don't know, but Amtrak appears to a larger part of American life than VIA is in Canada. The best selling point for Amtrak is certainly the incredible leg room, why would you ever want to fly? I have started a new album to show some photographs from the trip, click here!

The Railway Children in Toronto

I first heard about plans for the Toronto production of the Railway Children late last year when I was asked to take some measurements of the National Railway Museum's locomotive number 563. Seven months later here she is, 3600 miles from home at the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre. The production runs all summer. For details, visit:

Flying Scotsman back on Display

No doubt the internet is abuzz with photos of newly refurbished 4472 (and a plethora of other numbers) "Flying Scotsman". During my few hours at the NRM this morning, the crowds around the turntable continued to grow as people flocked to see this famous locomotive.

Thursday, March 31, 2011 in liquidation

It's official, the recent outage of popular photo-hosting site is not a technical fault. Rather, the site is now in liquidation. Thankfully, my entire online photo collection was backed up and has been moved over to the companion photo gallery of this site. was especially popular with transport photographers and the site's demise has meant the loss of a very valuable resource.

More details here.

A busy day at Whitby

With the CN Kingston Sub reopened after the Cobourg derailment, traffic has been heavy as the back log is cleared. Here we see CN 8813 and CN 2554 stopped at Whitby while GO 604 arrives with an eastbound train.

CN Derailment Halts Traffic

Due to the CN derailment near Cobourg on 27 March, traffic was halted on the CN Kingston Sub for three days. As a result, CN 2554 and 8813 are seen sitting at Whitby on 29 March, waiting for the line to reopen.

More information on the derailment can be found here.

A photo to begin with

This is a first post to highlight the new format for posting images. When a new image is uploaded to the Picasa archive, I will also post it here. Remember, the archive is far more extensive than what is being posted here.

To start, here is a shot of Hogwarts Express at the National Railway Museum on a less than ideal shooting day!

My second book is published

To bring this website up to date, my second book was published late last year. For more details, click here.
